A Tewe Universal monocular viewfinder with telescopic focusing grip and internal frame adjustment -- used by Val Guest during his career from 1955 onwards; accompanied by seven black and white xeroxes of publicity photographs showing Val Guest on the set of various films using this viewfinder; and a letter from Val Guest on his headed stationery, stating This is my trusty TEWE viewfinder which I first used in 1955 on 'The Quatermass Xperiment'...it became an indispensable companion on every film I made.. and ..a lucky mascot to me.., signed in black ink by subject (9)

Lot Essay

Val Guest, director, screenwriter and producer began his career in the film industry as a journalist in England and Hollywood. Following a a Ministry of Information short about the perils of sneezing, his directing career began. Best known for his science-fiction classics The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, The Quatermass Xperiment and The Day the Earth Caught Fire, Guest was awarded a BAFTA for the latter title in 1962. Five years later Guest was one of the directors of the spoof James Bond film Casino Royale, 1967.
