Lot Essay

In 1916 Exter began theatre work, doing stage sets and costumes for Innokenryi Annenskii's Thamira Khytharedes (Tamira of the Cittern), Oscar Wilde's Salomé in 1917 and Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in 1921, all produced by Aleksandr Tairov at the Moscow Kamernyti (Chamber) Theatre. She contributed to the idea of scenery and costumes based on Cubist spatial conceptions. From 1920 to 1922 she taught at Vkhutemas and in 1921 participated in the '5 x 5 = 25' show in Moscow, but in general did not support the extremist tendencies of Moscow Constructivism which rejected easel painting altogether.
