Lot Essay

Boyle's treatise on colours deals with a large variety of phenomena and contains many generalisations which were subsequently adopted by Newton in his Optics. Pepys was profoundly impressed by the learning of this tract and which he frequently alluded to, but also confessed that he could not understand a word of it.
