Lot Essay

Lorimer enjoyed the simplicity of early Queen Anne furniture and like Luytens admired this period. Mindful of the harsh retribution carried out after the suppression of the 1745 rebellion he was less keen on English furniture of later periods preferring to draw inspiration chiefly from simple Louis XV pieces or Dutch furniture.
A walnut chair of this model was in the collection of Hew Lorimer in the private Sitting Room at Kellie Castle.
