Lot Essay

These corner armchairs are also of Queen Anne inspiration although the pieds-de-biche is more of a French or Dutch feature. Lorimer noted in his personal sketchbooks that this was a "very popular pattern" and wrote "Whytock & Reid" beside it and this suggests that the model of chair was one of the firm's designs that the architect picked out and adapted. There is a pair of chairs of this model in the collection of the National Trust for Scotland at Kellie Castle.
