Lot Essay

The full-rigged ship Accrington was built in Nantes by Guibert Fils in 1855 and originally named Francis Arago. Rebuilt at Birkenhead by John Laird in 1859, she was then registered at 1,932 tons and measured 243½ feet in length with a 39 foot beam. Acquired by Gracie, Beazley & Co. of Liverpool towards the end of her career, she was last recorded in 1897.
