Lot Essay

The late Jonkheer Ir Adriaan Stoop (1856-1935) was a mine engineer and pioneer in the oil industry of the former Dutch East Indies. He was founder of the Dordtsche Petroleum Maatschappij which was taken over by De Koninklijke Shell in 1911. After returning to Holland from Indonesia, he settled in Bloemendaal and pursued his interest in art. See H. van Voorst Vader-Duydinck Sander, Leven en laten Leven, een Biografie van Ir Adriaan Stoop (1856-1935), Haarlem, 1994. He bought the above screen at a sale in Amsterdam, A. Mak (Ancienne Maison D.F. Roos and Cie.), 27-29 January, 1920, (lot 187) from the Collection Sakura, Tokyo. According to the french description in the catalogue, there were only two examples made of this screen ...' celui qui vient d'être décrit, et celui qui fut vendu à l'Exposition Universelle de Paris pour la somme de Frs. 36.000,-'.
At the outbreak of Second World War, the descendants of Adriaan Stoop gave the screen out on loan to the Museum van Volkenkunde, Leiden, for more than 60 years.
