A BYZANTINE TERRACOTTA RELIEF TILE WITH BIRDS AND URN
5TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.
With moulded decoration comprising a large fluted urn between two columns, a Chi-Rho monogram in the pediment above flanked by Alpha and Omega, the pediment with a bird seated at either side, smaller Chi-Rho monograms at either side of the urn foot, repair with restoration
14½ x 12¼ in. (37 x 31 cm.)

Lot Essay

Cf. R. Temple, Early Christian and Byzantine Art, Longmead, 1990, p. 76, no. 23 for similar. The representation of birds with an urn is a variation on the theme of the replenishment of the soul at the source of life.
