Lot Essay

The use of such plates is still a matter of conjecture. They might have been used for serving fish, the central depression serving as a saucer for containing the drained-off liquid, or they might have been used as funerary vessels given the afterlife connotations of fish and marine scenes in South Italian religious symbolism.
