Lot Essay

Magritte first developed this image in a painting done in January 1963, titled La sonnette d'Achille (Achilles' Bell; location unknown). In addition to that painting and the present drawing, he produced in 1965 a gouache of the subject (Sylvester, no. 1580), as well as another pen and ink drawing, reportedly done for a poster for the Alternative Attuali 2 exhibition in L'Aquila, Haly in August-September 1965.
