BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY GERSHWIN in ink on the titlepage to Ernest Hutcheson, concert pianist and Dean of the Julliard School in New York: "Mr. Hutcheson, in appreciation of his kindness & generosity with good advice."

Combining traditional musical forms with jazz and folk themes and rhythms, Gershwin's popular symphonic jazz composition, first performed in 1924, was originally scored for jazz band, piano, and orchestra. Gershwin had studied piano sporadically with Hutcheson in the twenties.
