FIRST EDITION of the full piano-vocal score of the Gershwin brothers' historic collaboration with the Heywards on Porgy and Bess, which remains the most successful and highly regarded American operatic work. INSCRIBED BY THE COMPOSER TO HIS MOTHER in bold ink beneath the frontispiece portait: "To my Mother-- Without her help this opera would never have been written. With all my love. George Feb. 1936." The composer's mother, Rose Bruskin, was Gershwin's sole surviving parent; his father, Morris Gershwin (originally Moishe Gershovitz) had passed away three years before, on 15 May, 1932. From an early age Gershwin's family had strongly encouraged George's interest in music; they bought a piano in 1910 and financed his lessons, initially with a succession of local instructors and then, in 1913, with Charles Hambitzer, whom Gershwin later described as "the first great musical influence in my life."
