Engraved title and 108 engraved maps, hand-colored in outline, mounted on guards, comprising 12 maps of the ancient world and 96 of modern geography (ink stamps on versos, some browning and creasing, a few small stains). Contemporary quarter calf (worn). Provenance: John Wickins (signature dated 1761 on front pastedown).
The maps in this atlas include 12 on ancient geography (nos 1-12); the remainder are of various parts of the world. The Atlas Universel was Robert de Vaugondy's principal atlas first published in 1750, soon after he had set up in business in Paris. In 1760 he was appointed Royal Geographer to the French court.
