Lot Essay

The engraving originally appeared in the book Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid (The Great Mirror of Folly) of 1720. The text on the peep show claims that images of the Mississippi and the South are on display. The image of satire as a mirror of folly was popular in the late 18th Century and was matched in contemporary literature with a growing interest in perspective and optical devices.
