Lieut. Commander Lionel "Buster" Crabb, RNVR, was a well-known Navy diver who had won the George Medal in the Second World War but whose career ended abruptly nearly fifty years ago amidst international controversy and some damaging accusations of espionage. In April 1956, the new Soviet Premier Krushchev came to Britain on an official visit and was conveyed here aboard the Russian cruiser Ordzhonikidze. The cruiser docked in Portsmouth and whilst she was there, Crabb mysteriously disappeared during a highly suspicious dive in the harbour. It was claimed that he had been spying on the ship's underwater defences but the Ministry of Defence vehemently denied the allegations. Even though Crabb's body was eventually recovered and supposedly identified, speculation continues to this day that the body was not his and that Crabb was actually captured and then somehow spirited away to the Soviet Union.
