One of Churchill's most ringing epigrams. The phrase appears most famously as the epigraph of his The Second World War, but Sir Edward Marsh, Churchill's Private Secretary, recalls its origin as shortly after the First World War (in A Number of People (1939), p.152). Churchill himself referred to it as a rejected suggestion for a war monument. The present inscription is an unusually early citation. The commonplace book is from the collection of Roy Dalton, chairman of Churchill's constituency Conservative Association in the 1950s; 'Nell', the original recipient of the inscription, is however unidentified.
