Lot Essay

The subject of the present watercolour is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book 4, lines 171-6. Apollo, god of the sun, who saw all, witnessed Venus' adulterous affair with Mars and reported the story to her husband Vulcan, who is shown in his forge.
