The present drawing is close in style to drawings executed on Cotman's 1818 tour of Normandy; see Château Gaillard, Normandy, dated 24 July 1818, in Tate Britain (V. Rienaecker, John Sell Cotman, Leigh-on-Sea, 1953, p. 72).
Cotman made three tours of Normandy in 1817, 1818 and 1820. Kitson wrote of the tour 'No sepia or water-colour drawings made on the spot survive among his Normandy sketches, and it seems that Cotman did not take painting materials with him. He relied upon his pencil and upon his memory' (S. Kitson, The Life of John Sell Cotman, London, 1937, p. 194). His drawings were published in Architectural Antiquities of Normandy finally published in two volumes in 1822.
In 1818 Cotman also published Excursions in the County of Norfolk and Excursions in the County of Suffolk.
