Lot Essay

'Painted from a room [at the 'Chaine d'Or'] which I have been lucky enough to occupy annually for a day or two. The outlook from it is delightfully peaceful. The quietude is only emphasised by the subdued chug-chug of the long oil barges which pass and repass beyond the island' (see Sir William Russell Flint, R.A., P.R.W.S., Royal Academy Diploma Galleries Exhibition Catalogue, 1962, p. 29).
