The present watercolour was painted while de Glehn was working as a censor at Versailles, staying with his wife Jane at a flat in the Bois de Boulogne. He did a series of sketches of the grounds of Versailles which, together with sketches made at the Italian front in 1917, formed the basis of a one-man exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1919.
