AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED BELL-KRATER
Circa 390-370 B.C.
The obverse with Theseus fighting the Marathonian bull, gripping a rope which is tied around its horns, a club raised in his right hand, a bandolier across his chest, his mantle draped over his arms and his right shoulder, a petasos hanging in back, Athena leaning on her shield and holding a spear looking on from the right, with two onlookers on the left, perhaps Medea and Perithoös; the reverse with three draped youths; a band of meander and checkered squares below the scenes, a band of laurel below the rim, fanning palmettes with scrolling tendrils below the handles, ovolo at the handle joins, the bull and other details in added white, details in brown for the bull
