A ROMAN MARBLE HERM HEAD
Circa 1st Century A.D.
In the archaistic style and perhaps inspired from a bronze original, sculpted with heavy lidded eyes beneath sharply modelled arching brows, the slope of the forehead and the line of the brows merging into a continuous slope with the straight nose, the smiling lips emphasized by the thin undulating mustache, the ends of which overlap the ridged, spade-shaped beard, the strands of the upper surface of the beard sculpted in U-shaped rows in shallow relief, wearing a thick foliate wreath with the ties falling on to the shoulders, the hair radiating in incised locks at the crown of the head, with long locks combed forward over the ears, and a long mass tapering in the back
15½ in. (39.4 cm) high
