A St. Petersburg (Imperial Porcelain Factory) terracotta-ground plate
painted in black and ochre with a maenad holding a thyrsus and a garland, standing beside a ewer on a plinth, within a band of stylized leaves and berries, the border painted with stylized scrolling foliage, beneath a black line rim, underglaze blue mark, circa 1844 (minute glaze chips and surface scratches) -- 22cm. diam.

Lot Essay

The Etruscan dinner and coffee service for 48 settings was made in 1844 for the Tsarina's Pavilion, built on the eponymous Island in the Columns Park at Petergof, designed by Stackenschneider between 1842 and 1844.
