A German engraved gilt-metal quarter striking tower clock
Probably Augsburg. First quarter 17th Century
The case on large engraved gilt-metal feet supporting the spreading moulded base engraved with intricate scrolling foliage and multiple flowerheads, and centred on each side by various realistically engraved animals including a dragon, a stag, a horse, a dog, a lion, a deer and a hare, the left side panel flanked by pilasters engraved with a trellis design, and inhabited with beasts beneath the arched glazed window, the right side with similar pilasters flanking the glazed window engraved below with a deer and stag, the bell gallery above pierced with balustraded arches and surmounted by a large knopped gilt-metal finial, the main dial with later Roman chapter ring and blued steel hands, engraved in the centre and below with intricate scrolling foliage inhabited with birds and centred by a figure playing a lute, the rear dial finely engraved with exotic winged beasts and centred by two small dials showing the state of strike for the hours and quarters, the movement secured to the base by means of four latches and comprising mixed brass and gilt-brass and iron, the pillars of gilt-brass and square section, chain fusee for the verge escapement, with later pendulum, engraved going barrels for the hour and quarter strikes on two bells above
