A German brass striking large square table clock
Probably Augsburg. Dated 1584
The dial plate bordered by the inscription; QVID*ME*VERTENDO*MISER*ET*QVATIENDO*QVID*VRGES*AN*NESGIS*MEGVM*QVOD*T VA*VITA*FLVIT*ANO*1584, the dial with later twice XII chapter disc with foliate engraving and single steel hand, the dial plate later engraved with unusual rustic scenes, the large square movement with four iron baluster pillars secured with screws to the front and backplates, the frontplate of steel, the backplate overlaid with a plate of brass, the going train with chain and fusee to the spring barrel with brass body and pinned steel caps, the verge escapement now with later balance wheel and large foliate engraved cock, similar chain and fusee for the strike train again with pinned steel caps to the spring barrel, the countwheel planted on the backplate and the bell and hammer positioned within the plates, the case engraved to the four sides with female figures emblematic of the cardinal virtues:
PRVDENTIA; represented by a seated Prudence with three faces, her left arm entwined with a serpent and her right holding a globe and book recalling the mythographer's view of time past, present and future, with a lake and hillside town in the background and pierced for a sound fret with a five-pointed star and engraved; QVISQVIS ES, O PRVDENS, IANVM SECTARE BIFRONTEM: SERPENTIS VARIOS FINGERE DESCE DOLOS.

IVSTICIA; depicted seated with a crown on her head with a set of scales in her left hand and a sword resting across her shoulder attended by a stone-bearing crane (inspired by Aristotle's Historia Animalum) flanked by two oval armorial crests, the left signed IM, the following inscription to the upper and lower borders; QVAE: ILEA: IVSTICIA. ECQVID TORVO LVMINEA FLECTI NESCIA SVM LACRYMIS, NEC PRECE, NEC PRECIO CVR GLADIVM TVA DEXTRA GERIT: CVR LAEVA BILANCEN FONDERAT HAEC CAVSAS: PERCVTIT ILLE REOS.
