A Victorian gilt-brass month-going tripod clock with integral thermometer and barometer
Thomas Cole, London, 840/8. Circa 1845
The circular silvered dial with painted Roman chapters and delicate blued steel hands, subsidiary seconds ring below XII within the centre finely engraved with delicate flowerheads and scrolling foliage on a hatched ground, the steel winding square below on a foliate engraved background, the movement comprising two individual sections, the lower section signed on the backplate THOs COLE LONDON 840/8 with four plain pillars secured with blued steel screws on the backplate and holding the going spring barrel and centre wheel with five crossings, the upper section with shouldered backplate secured to the front plate with four plain pillars secured with four blued steel screws, securing the remaining four wheels of the train terminating with a Vulliamy-type deadbeat escapement, with typical gilt-metal sleeved pendulum terminating with a silvered spherical bob with milled rating nut below and suspended from a G-bracket, with plumb line above, the movement and dial secured to the front tripod legs by means of brass milled knobs, the circular gilt and stepped base engraved with intricate scolling foliage with cornucopiae and delicate flowerheads and signed at the front THOs COLE LONDON within a foliate cartouche, the semi-circular glazed barometer with silvered register scale and blued steel hand with manually adjustable gilt recording hand, with mercury thermometer behind within a foliate engraved gilt border, spring-loaded pendulum securing block behind the thermometer; the base resting on three adjustable gilt-metal nuts; with original glass dome
