A fine late 18th-Century silver and brass Butterfield-type compass,
signed on the underside Bizot AParis, with folding brass gnomon with lion's head index and graduations 40°-60°, the silver baseplate with hours 4-12, 1-8 for latitudes 40°, 45° and 49°, the glazed compass box with brass retaining ring, blued-iron needle and the base engraved with initials S, OR, M and OC, the underside with finely engraved signature and the latitudes of six French cities, contained in the original red plush-lined and leather-covered octagonal wooden case, with a brass hook and eye -- 2½in. (6.4cm.) wide
