the lid engraved with various characters and graduations, opening to reveal a compass with cruciform steel needle and glazed cover, folding gnomon, and moving index arm, with various graduations and inscriptions, the underside similarly inscribed to the lid and the edge with scroll decoration, with one hook and pin for closing -- 1½in.
