A fine 18th-Century Bohemian horizontal sundial,
signed Fecit Iohann Engelbrecht, 1785 and further engraved No. 11, the horizontal plate with two folding brass gnomons ([?]19th-Century replacements), the first sliding in an aperture to set against a scale either side of days of the month, each month with three settings, for example January 1, 10, 20 and 30, February 8, 18 and 28 and so on, bordered on either side by an engraved scroll with the sigils for the houses of the Zodiac, surrounded by the hour scale VIII-I, XII-IIII and entitled HOROLOG. OVAL, the second gnomon with a plummet and an engraved latitude scale on the gnomon base 40°-60° presented in an engraved scroll, to read off several scales Longiduto Diei 8-16, Longiduto Noctis 16-8, HORÆ AB ORTU SOLIS 6-13, HORÉ AB OCCASU SOLIS II-XII, a scale for the days of the month in the same divisions as on the dial above, with sigils for the houses of the Zodiac, and around the edge of the plate hours VIII-I, XII-IIII, with three knurled brass adjustable screw feet, contained in the original chamois-lined leather-covered case, the edges lightly gilt-tooled, with two brass hooks and eyes (some staining to leather) -- 7 1/8in.
