The inscription refers to Zechariah; iii: 9: 'For behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; upon one stone are seven eyes: behold I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. In that day, saith the Lord of hosts shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.'
This passage can be understood as foretelling the Passion. The stone symbolises Christ, upon whose solidity and strength the Church was to be based (an analogy used elsewhere in the Bible - for example Psalms; cxviii: 22: 'The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone'). The reference to seven eyes is taken to refer to those of the Father, angels, saints, martyrs, patriarchs, prophets and people, who will behold the suffering of Christ, which, it is prophesied, will redeem mankind - 'I will remove iniquity of that land'.
