Chancery 2o (261 x 188 mm). Collation: a-f8.6 g8 h-z8.6 \\i8 \\j6 \\g8. 184 leaves. Xylographic title. Gothic types 4:120 and 3:96. 5-line initial on a3 illuminated in green, pink and gold and with floral border decoration of same palette, other 3- to 4-line rubricated Lombard initials, some paragraph marks, capital strokes in red. (Some light even browning, small hole on z6 affecting a few letters.) 16th-century German blindstamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, two brass clasps. Provenance: some early marginalia -- Dr. Georg Kloss (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (letterpress bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, 1 November 1943) -- donated to SMS November 1943.

A rare Strassburg edition of a work previously ascribed to Guillermus Parisiensis. Only three other copies located in U.S. libraries according to ISTC. BSB-Ink. H-150; GW 11954; Hain *8243; Goff G-658. Not in BMC.

Chancery 2o. Collation: a8 b6 c8 d-o6(+-o6) p8. 96 leaves, final leaf blank. Gothic types 1:160 (title and headlines), 2:91 (text), and 3:91 (small headings). 47 lines, double column. 4-line initial on a2 illuminated in green and pink, 7-line initial on a4 illuminated in green, pink and gold with border decoration, Lombard initials rubricated, capital strokes, underlinings in red through beginning of second quire, other initial spaces with printed guide letters. (Tear crossing text on f5, some minor marginal spotting, a few headlines shaved.)

First published in 1476, the Dormi secure were written by John of Werden. He used Biblical quotations and examples from the life of the people, but with little reference to the Church Fathers or scholastic writers. The title refers to the 'secure sleep' of the preacher, who could rely on these sermons in the pulpit, rather than losing sleep writing his own. BMC I, 133 (IB.1840); BSB-Ink.
