Uniformly bound in 19th-century English blue hard-grained morocco, covers with arms of Theodore Williams in gilt at center, gilt-lettered on spines, edges gilt. Provenance: Rev. Theodore Williams (bindings) -- Joseph Neeld (armorial bookplates) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplates; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 16 August 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.
FINE SET, mixed editions as usual of the Port Royal version of the Bible. De Sacy's French and the Latin Vulgate are printed in parallel columns. This Bible was published by Desprez at Paris from 1672-1695 and is the earliest to present the complete Port Royal version. The separate volumes were subsequently reprinted at Paris and at Brussels and sets are generally found, as here, mixed. Darlow & Moule 3785. (32)
