8 volumes, 2o (361 x 232 mm). Greek and Roman types. Engraved title in vol. I by Leonardus Gaultier (Johnson, p.20:1) with elaborate architectual frame containing figures of Saints Nazian, Athanasius, Basilius and Cyrillus and encorporating the royal arms of Eton, Oxford, Cambridge, etc. (Some occasional pale spotting and light soiling.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, smooth spines gilt-ruled and -decorated with fleuron device, morocco lettering-pieces, overlapping edges (a few hinges weak, losses along spines on vols. V and VIII). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplates; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 19 June 1942) -- donated to SMS 27 July 1942.

FIRST EDITION, second issue, with new preliminaries for each volume and the added engraved title in vol. I. "This splendid monument of Greek printing in England -- where nothing like it, either in extent, or in intrinsic importance, had made its appearance -- was conducted and completed at the sole expense of its learned and liberal editor: an expense, which printing, paper, and remuneration to fellow labourers included, is said to have amounted to £8,000" (Dibden, Greek and Latin Classics).
