4o (276 x 191 mm). Title printed in red and black, section titles for the Vita Sancti Columbae and Vita Sanctae Brigidae. Engraved vignette on title of Saints Columba, Patricius and Brigida, engraved portrait of St. Patricius on e2v, engraved portraits of Saints Columba and Brigida on section titles. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, covers ruled with double gilt fillets, spine gilt-lettered and decorated, red sprinkled edges (front joint weak). Provenance: Pierre de Maridal, member of the King's Council (bookplate) -- Sir Thomas Seabright (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from William H. Robinson, London, 31 May 1943) -- donated to SMS 1943.

FIRST EDITION of this famous medieval romance known as "Saint Patrick's Purgatory." The account of Gilbert of Louth, sent by Gervase to an Irish king, was written by Henry of Saltrey (fl. 1150). A knight, Owen, acts as Gilbert's interpreter and tells him the story of his descent into Purgatory. Brunet III:1673.
