ALCOTT, Louisa May (1832-1888). Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1868.
8o (165 x 110 mm). 6-page publisher's advertisement at end. Frontispiece and three plates. (Some light spotting.) Original terra-cotta cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine, brown endpapers (front cover lightly rubbed, some wear at ends of spine). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, without "Part One" on spine and with no announcement for part two at the end of the text. BAL 158; Grolier American 74; Johnson High Spots 11.
[Laid-in:] Autograph letter signed to Alcott from the publisher Sampson Low, 24 February 1870, relating to the upcoming publication of her Little Men in England. The publisher notes that they look forward to publishing her work, but warn against copyright infringement: "The pirates have already stolen 'Little Women' and they will assuredly steal 'Little Men' if a loophole is left open for them... In the present case to make assurance doubly sure You must make your arrangements so as to be here, resident in England on the day of publication and that day must not be posterior to the day of publication in America." The top of the letter has been torn away, affecting several lines on the verso. Little Men was first published by Sampson Low in England, preceding the listing of the American edition by a month.
