Provenance: OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES (1809-1894), American physician, poet and humorist (bookplate with printed statement: "The gift of his son Oliver Wendell Holmes") -- Edmund Clarence Stedman (1833-1908), American author (autograph letter signed by the author ["T.B.A."] dated 18 November 1878 tipped to front free endpaper in which he praises Stedman's recent poem on Bryant and discusses publication matters) -- Henry Aiken Metcalf (gift inscription dated 1905 from Stedman on separate leaf tipped to front flyleaf) -- Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, with the readings given in Parley to Penrod. WITH AN IMPORTANT LITERARY PROVENANCE: the present passed from the collection of Oliver Wendell Holmes, whose "Breakfast Table" series of essays were among the most popular of the day, to Edmund Clarence Stedman who worked as a poet, critic and editor in the late nineteenth century.
