Venetian armchairs of similar scale and richness of ornament are illustrated in S. Levy, Il Mobile Veneziano del Settecento, Milan, vol.I, 1964, figs. 5 and 12. A PAIR OF NORTH ITALIAN CREAM-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT WALNUT ARMCHAIRS
Venice, mid-18th Century
Each with pounced ground and carved with scrolls and foliage, the cartouche-shaped back centred by a shell, the scroll arms and serpentine seat with conforming decoration, on cabriole legs, the back and seat originally upholstered à chassis, covered with pink velvet, with a loose cushion, each armchair inscribed in pencil to the back 'S.Gaetano', one back with Pietro Accorsi trade label, one back rail replaced, probably originally entirely gilt, the pouncing possibly embellished, one chair with repaired breaks to front legs
