Decorated allover with trellis parquetry, the rectangular yellow brèche marble top with canted corners, above a conforming frieze applied to the front with ribbon-hung garlands flanking crossed flambeau and quiver, over a cupboard door set with a bevelled glazed panel and a relief roundel decorated with a Classical nymph at a pyre, the mirrored interior with two shelves above a storage space, the angles with musical trophies, the sides with similar glazed panels, on cabriole legs with floral-cast hips, tapering to hoof-cast sabots, the lockplate engraved with P. SORMANI/10 R CHARLOT/PARIS

Lot Essay

Italian by birth, Paul Sormani established his highly successful Parisian atelier in 1854 at 114 rue du Temple, moving to 10 rue Charlot in 1867. He exhibited at all of the major international exhibitions, showcasing petits meubles de fantaisie, as well as fine quality versions of Louis XV, XVI and Transitional styles.
