For the attribution, compare, for example, the artist's painting of Mars and Fine Arts overcoming Ignorance, which is signed and dated 1605, and is now in the Groeningemuseum, Bruges (see R.H. Wilenski, Flemish Painters, London, 1960, II, pl. 492).

Anthonie Claeissins was the son of Pieter Claeissins the Elder, who was chiefly active as a manuscript illuminator. He was a pupil of his father and Pieter Jansz. Pourbus, and became a master of the Bruges Guild in 1570 where he was city painter from 1570-1581.

Mr. Jan de Maere believes that the present work is by Jacob de Backer.
