Lot Essay

Galle à Paris Rue Vivienne, is mentioned in Tardy's Dictionaire des horlogers Francais as being active on Rue Vivienne in 1830.
The signature probably refers to the bronzier Gérad Jean Gallé (1788-1846). He was the son of Claude Gallé (1759-1815) who was bronzier to the Garde-Meuble during the reign of Louis XVI and also during the Consulat and the Empire.
A mantel clock with the same basic design but in a different configuration is illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg La Pendule Française p. 397, ill. D.
