Lot Essay

Born in Copenhague in 1879, Viggo Hieronimus Jörgensen, better known as Viggo Jarl (d. 1965) was a pupil of Ségoffin. He won the celebrated Grand Prix de Rome and exhibited at the Paris Salon des Artistes Français. He was awarded a mention honorable in 1905. Many of his works are now in the Anneberg Collections as well as in Copenhague's Statens Museums For Kunst, such as a version of the present work. It is illustrated in Billedhuggeren, Viggo Jarl, 1879-1959, Host & Sons Forlag, Kobenhavn, 1959, Planche 3.
