Lot Essay

The whimsical foliate carving of these fauteuils relates to the distinctive palm fronds depicted on the stiles of a fauteuil, which feature on a design executed around 1730 and attributed to Juste-Auréle Meissonnier. A bolder variant of this foliate carving appears on a polychrome-decorated fauteuil by Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot, from the collection of Isaac de Camondo and now in the Louvre (B. Pallot, The Art of the Chair in 18th Century France, Tours, 1987, pp. 37 and 43).
