Lot Essay

The private hallmark Xingyouheng Tang was used by the fifth Prince Ding, Zaichun, a great-great grandson of the Qianlong emperor. This bottle, with its flawless purity, lovely color, and classic form, exemplifies scholarly taste.

The Hall of Constancy belonged to the Fifth Prince Ding, Zaiquan, who died in 1857. For a very similar bottle from the collection of Mary and George Bloch, and further discussion, see H. Moss, V. Graham, K.B. Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Hong Kong, 1995, vol. 1, Jade, no. 154.

See, also, for a remarkably similar white jade bottle still in the Imperial Collection, in Chang Lin-sheng, Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, p. 152, no. 127.
