Late 18th Century, maker's mark only, a bird looking to the left, the pipe cleaner, 19th Century
Oblong with curved ends, the hinged cover engraved with a street scene, within repoussé C-scrolls and floral and foliate border, the reverse with border enclosing a panel of acorns, flowers and scrolling foliage, the interior of the cover later fitted with pipe cleaner and engraved with an inscription dated 1869, the side engraved Sijbe Bouwes Zeeman 1773, marked on rim

Lot Essay

The later inscription reads:
Aan mijn broeder Roelof deze twee doozen tot gedagtenis den 3 April 1869; tot een altijd aandenken om niet te verkoopen; Wedu P S van der Zee geb Wieten.
The translation reads: For my brother Roelof, these two boxes in remembrance of the 3rd of April 1869; as a memento not to sell; Widow P S van der Zee, born Wieten.
