Engraved portrait and frontispiece, 27 engraved plates, 10 folding, and 2 folding engraved maps, woodcut initials. (Some browning, light waterstaining mainly affecting text, one leaf with corner lacking, maps slightly trimmed on fore-edges). Contemporary vellum (somewhat rubbed, extremities lightly worn).

Willem Bosman spent 14 years in Africa, in the employ of the Dutch Company of the West Indies and as factor of the Fort São Jorge da Mina, the most important Dutch trading post on the Gold Coast. His observations of local places, animals and birds, together with other European-built forts, were published in this work on his return to Europe, forming an important early account of West Africa.
