Lot Essay

For a teabowl and saucer with a similar pattern see Chinese Export Porcelain from the Reeves Collection at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia, p. 36, colour pl. VI, no. 3, cat. 120; a teabowl from the Musée de Caramulo, Portugal, is illustrated in Beurdeley, p. 209, cat. 233 and in Hervouët et Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 401, fig. 16.139. A variety of interpretations of this subjectmatter was made not only on Chinese decorated pieces, but also on Dutch-decorated pieces. The latter is clearly shown in eight examples illustrated in Hervouët et Bruneau, op. cit., p. 400 - 403, figs. 16.138 - 16.144. A similar example was sold at Christie's, New York, 23 January 2001, lot 129.
