A Dutch-decorated 'crucifixion' tea bowl and saucer
Mid 18th Century
Enamelled with Christ on the cross between a mourning figure of Mary and St. John, in the distance a hilly landscape with a church, encircled at the rim with an iron-red and gilt spearhead border, the cup additionally decorated with symbols of the Passion, a crown of thorns, nails and a hammer, minute rim chips and small cracks (2)

A variety of interpretations of this subjectmatter was made not only on Chinese decorated pieces, but also on Dutch-decorated pieces. The latter is clearly shown in eight examples illustrated in Hervouët et Bruneau, op. cit., p. 400 - 403, figs. 16.138 - 16.144.
