An encre-de-Chine 'farewell sailor' teabowl and saucer
Mid 18th Century
Decorated en grisaille with touches of enamelling and gilt with a farewell scene, showing a European couple in embrace beside a tree and with a church in the background, the gentleman pointing towards a three-mast ship with Dutch flags with which he will set sail shortly, all within a gilt and black double-line border, minute rim fritting

Lot Essay

This scene is traditionally known as 'The Sailor's Farewell' of which a variety of interpretations are known. It was a popular subjectmatter in the 18th century, with those whose loved ones had left for the Far East.
