Unsigned (Kyoto or Osaka), Edo Period (Late 18th Century)
Katabori, stained ivory; a figure of a Westerner standing upright and facing to the front and with his right foot turned backwards and resting on his left foot, with a long curly wig under his wide-brimmed tasselled hat, dressed in a long coat with stylised wave designs, and striped stockings, and holding a long-tailed cockerel with both hands, its neck and head to the left of his face and hat, the himotoshi formed by two almost equal holes drilled to left and right in his back
