Unsigned (Kyoto or Osaka), Edo Period (Mid-Late 18th Century) Katabori, stained boxwood; a standing figure of a Westerner in a curly wig, his mouth open, bending forward at the waist, wearing a ruff and a long coat tied at the waist, a tasselled, trumpet-mouthed musical instrument in his right hand, his left hand behind his back supporting a small child which climbs on his right shoulder, the himotoshi formed by two holes, one much larger than the other, in the left hand side of the figure above and below the waist, the larger hole below the smaller, old wear
